Dolby E is a great technology that was designed for real-time operation; it also allows useful metadata to be carried within Dolby E structure. So when we incorporated Dolby E Encode and Decode in to Engine, we spoke to a lot of customers about their issues and problems. Many customers have problems with Dolby E in the file domain with incorrect guard band, have Dolby E appear in a file without the File metadata having Dolby headers, or have the first few frames of Audio not having any Dolby E identifiers. Our customers needed these issues handled well enough to allow automation of the Encode Decode in their workflow. All solvable with careful design.

Recently, we worked with Evolution, a leading Post Production Company in London, to provide watch folder based Dolby E encoding so they could easily and reliably package and deliver 60+ hours a week of Dolby E encoded content.

Globecast

Globecast, as a global aggregator and distributor, has a huge amount of content to Encode and manage and we worked with them to provide an Engine capable of encoding 4 files at a time. It allowed them to prepare enough content to air a number of channels. The system they have can be scaled to process more content to meet additional demand. Engine allows a wide number of encoding profiles to be stored and recalled so files can be processed to meet client requirements.

Globecast therefore needed both a different profile for individual needs and to be able to scale operations. Engine enables them to set up many individual workflows, together with multiple Dolby licenses, to ensure that the right encoding is used reliably for the right content every time.

This has been hugely labour-saving, as it allows an operator to simply nominate the target region of the world and a predetermined workflow does the rest. Voila!

Deluxe Media Cloud also has a large volume of media to process, some of which includes files that have been badly authored to the degree that most Dolby E decoders don’t recognize the encoding. Thus an operator has to load the file, scroll manually into the video stream, register and log the type of encoding, select the required process and then decode.

Once again, Emotion were able to work together with Deluxe to automate this with Engine workflows that examine a file and report back via an .xml, prior to deploying the correct decode algorithm. This elegant approach is available immediately as part of the core Engine product.
